Strawberry Butterfly Lunch
I have always struggled to get my daughter to eat fruit. I remember when she was 18 months old, and we were at one of our mothers groups. A platter of fruit was on the floor for all the toddlers, who were eating the fruit like they were going out of fashion. My daughter was the only one who didn’t even touch it. She still struggles eating fruit, however we keep putting it on her plate and encouraging her to try it.
When presenting their lunch yesterday, I accidentally created a strawberry butterfly, while trying to arrange the food on the plate. Simple, easy.. and effective! It definitely caught her eye..
On the menu:
Peanut Butter Sandwiches (using Tip Top’s The One bread)
Pikelets
Cheese
Strawberries
Raisins

Maybe I need to have a go at this bento style lunches one day….
xx
Gorgeous! I’m starting a series every Thursday about nourishing children with food. Maybe you’d like to do a guest post? X
sounds wonderful
G was the same with fruit, but started enjoying it when she started at day care. C can’t get enough of it. I love the butterfly. I can imagine a whole tray of them at a party – simple and effective! xx
Thanks Catherine!
Yeah I was hoping she would like it more from daycare.. but doesnt seem to be!
The butterfly is a great idea, absolutely love it. You always make everything look so effortless and appealing, puts my lunches to shame!
oh its gorgeous! so glad she loved it
Cute! You always inspire me to make my girls snacks and meals more appealing
The butterflu is cute – did she eat it?
Nope she didn’t eat the butterfly (well only the raisins)..
Love that butterfly! So simple, yet clever!
It was.. pity she only ate the raisins!
Very creative as always Yvette!
Thanks Jodi!!
Oh! It’s so cute! Any little girl would love it!
Thank you
I love that butterfly, I tried making a fruit butterfly when I put some fruit on the plate the other day, Miss 6 straight off the bat asked if I had given her a dragonfly for lunch. Near enough is good enough I guess!
ohh but a dragon fly is awesome!!
bless your daughter!
You never cease to amaze me
Is there a reason she doesn’t want to eat it? Does she react to it in any form or is it just a dislike for the taste?
She seems to have a wide (and gorgeously presented) array of food, so I wouldn’t worry too much.
Becc
Thanks Becc,
She just refuses to try.. I am not sure what she eats at Daycare (they never tell me specifically that she ate fruit, just that her plate was clear – meaning another child could have eaten it).. she will drink fruit smoothies etc.. but not eat it.. She will only eat Apple at home.
When I was little the Doctor told my Mum not to worry as long as I eat apples and drink milk, I will be fine. That turned out to be great advice as I wasn’t finicky, I actually had intolerances to a heap of foods. If she had of pursued, I would have been a very sickly child.
Did MissC try the strawberry???
no
I know I can make my own … but it’s nice to live vicariously through your blog
.
hehe thanks Enid
Zeb loves certain fruit, other things, he won’t touch with a barge pole – I just stock up on the bananas, strawberries and watermelon he loves
very cute butterfly xxxxx
I wish Cassie would eat more than just Apples.. but that is her only fruit she will touch
Can we come to your house for fruit??? Do you use cookie cutters? Great idea!! xx
You are welcomed anytime
I use cookie cutters all the time
My daughter will only eat green tart apples!! But thanks to your ideas I’ve got her eating sultanas and some dried apricots, although it’s not fresh it’s a start right? Emily
wow green tart apples – my daughter only eats Apples (whole) and Carrots and Celery.. so thats why I do alot of trail mixes – raisins, dried fruit, cheerios etc..
Did she eat it?
She ate the raisins.. but not the strawberries.. we will continue to try
Very creative! I’m really going to have to step my game up with N starting school in 2 weeks! He will love opening his lunch box and seeing different shapes and animals! Will have to get the cookie cutters out! x Aroha
Happy to bounce ideas around with you Aroha if you need help
I serve my daughter peanut butter sandwiches every day.. just in a different cutter.
My kidlets eat fruit like its going out of fashion! The eldest’s tastes have limited as he has got older but the younger two love it all. So did she eat the butterfly?
Oh I wish she did.. I do blame myself for not pushing it more when she was little.. but we live and learn – my son loves EVERYTHING..
She ate the raisins.. no strawberries.
Yvette, you’re so clever, I love your ideas!
Thank you
You are way too creative, your food always looks delicious!
you make me blush Eleise!! Its just a little imagination and a few cookie cutters
Delightful! I still remember the sunburst patterns on the plate mum would make us with sultanas in the centre, celery and carrot sticks radiating out and cheese cubes around the edges. Presentation sure helps change picky little minds
Visiting from – you guessed it – #TeamIBOT
I love the oldschool pattens my mum made with my food when I was little..
Great idea! Might take her a few (ok, heaps) of times seeing it before she wants to try it. You could even get some kiwi fruit, and along with strawberries, encourage her to make her own butterfly design.
Love you work!
Yeah the strawberry is on her plate.. but yet to be eaten.. think we might need to get a juicer or something
That is so cute, no one could resist. You are so creative. Rachel xx
Cheers Rachel!
