Strawberry Butterfly Lunch

· January 15, 2013

I have always struggled to get my daughter to eat fruit. I remember when she was 18 months old, and we were at one of our mothers groups. A platter of fruit was on the floor for all the toddlers, who were eating the fruit like they were going out of fashion. My daughter was the only one who didn’t even touch it. She still struggles eating fruit, however we keep putting it on her plate and encouraging her to try it.

When presenting their lunch yesterday, I accidentally created a strawberry butterfly, while trying to arrange the food on the plate. Simple, easy.. and effective! It definitely caught her eye..

On the menu:
Peanut Butter Sandwiches (using Tip Top’s The One bread)
Pikelets
Cheese
Strawberries
Raisins

I love that butterfly, I tried making a fruit butterfly when I put some fruit on the plate the other day, Miss 6 straight off the bat asked if I had given her a dragonfly for lunch. Near enough is good enough I guess!

  12. Becc says:

You never cease to amaze me :)
Is there a reason she doesn’t want to eat it? Does she react to it in any form or is it just a dislike for the taste?
She seems to have a wide (and gorgeously presented) array of food, so I wouldn’t worry too much.

    • Thanks Becc,

She just refuses to try.. I am not sure what she eats at Daycare (they never tell me specifically that she ate fruit, just that her plate was clear – meaning another child could have eaten it).. she will drink fruit smoothies etc.. but not eat it.. She will only eat Apple at home.

      • Becc says:

When I was little the Doctor told my Mum not to worry as long as I eat apples and drink milk, I will be fine. That turned out to be great advice as I wasn’t finicky, I actually had intolerances to a heap of foods. If she had of pursued, I would have been a very sickly child.

  13. Rachel says:

Did MissC try the strawberry??? :D

  14. Enid Bite'Em says:

  17. Emily says:

My daughter will only eat green tart apples!! But thanks to your ideas I’ve got her eating sultanas and some dried apricots, although it’s not fresh it’s a start right? Emily

  18. Very creative! I’m really going to have to step my game up with N starting school in 2 weeks! He will love opening his lunch box and seeing different shapes and animals! Will have to get the cookie cutters out! x Aroha

My kidlets eat fruit like its going out of fashion! The eldest’s tastes have limited as he has got older but the younger two love it all. So did she eat the butterfly?

    • Oh I wish she did.. I do blame myself for not pushing it more when she was little.. but we live and learn – my son loves EVERYTHING.. :)

She ate the raisins.. no strawberries.

  20. Yvette, you’re so clever, I love your ideas!

  21. Eleise says:

You are way too creative, your food always looks delicious!

  22. Delightful! I still remember the sunburst patterns on the plate mum would make us with sultanas in the centre, celery and carrot sticks radiating out and cheese cubes around the edges. Presentation sure helps change picky little minds :) Visiting from – you guessed it – #TeamIBOT :D

  23. iSophie says:

Great idea! Might take her a few (ok, heaps) of times seeing it before she wants to try it. You could even get some kiwi fruit, and along with strawberries, encourage her to make her own butterfly design.

    Love you work!

  24. That is so cute, no one could resist. You are so creative. Rachel xx
